Hello? Who's there?

Tonight Jayden discovered the joy of talking on the phone.  Carmen called while I was running around making dinner and medicating the dog and Jayden immediately grabbed the phone.  I made it so that Jayden couldn't hang up on him and then let him run with him, just giving him prompts from time to time.  It was so cute!

AND I caught it on video.

Jayden is hilarious.  I guess Maria, Julia's assistant, was going over shapes with Jayden today - stars, triangles, etc. - in Spanish and he was saying every one of them back to her, with just about perfect pronunciation.  He does really well at home too, in English - he can say things like "elephant" and "icicle" and "octopus" and recognize pictures of these things.  He knows that "milk" goes in the "refrigerator," and he can recognize all kinds of other things: dog (obviously), deer, island, banana, boat, garden, foot, hand, etc.  It's amazing the amount of sounds he can make and the things he can recognize.  And then it's also amazing that he can't say the "l" sound and it comes out "ch" - leche is "che-che."  Oh well.  Even Julia was impressed with Jayden today - makes his mama feel all kinds of proud for how naturally brilliant he is and how little effort it took for us to read to him, to talk to him, to just expose him to language even at a young age.

And one more "how-awesome-is-Jayden" note: our babysitter Katrina asked me to be a reference for her for another potential babysitting job.  I wrote back and said no problem, happy to vouch for you, you are wonderful with Jayden.  She wrote back and said it's not hard when he is the easiest going kid ever and kids that are happy to cuddle 100% of the time are the best.  He just makes such a sweet impression on people, even though he takes longer to warm up.  It makes me happy.  And makes me want to hug him.  Except for when he wakes up at 6:15 am crying and doesn't stop whining until 7:15 am.  I still want to hug him - just not in as much of a warm and fuzzy way.  Here's hoping he decides to sleep a little longer tomorrow.  I'd even take 6:45 if he were willing.  We'll see.

Oh, and I realized my last post was Sunday night.  Since a whole lot happened on Monday, I should update you all:
Jasmine had to have emergency surgery on Monday.  We woke up and she had a huge bubble in her ear, which turned out to be an aural hematoma.  We took her to the doggie ER and they admitted her and did the surgery almost right away.  She came home the same day and is recovering well.  She has stitches and will sadly have them for two to three weeks.  She has to wear a cone at night and when we're not home so that she doesn't scratch.  Jayden does not like the cone and demands that it go "awh" (off) whenever he sees it.  The vet said that Jasmine is completely healthy otherwise, which is great.  Sometimes an aural hematoma can mean other health problems.  But not for our almost-eight-year-old doggie.   When we were in the vet, agreeing to have the surgery, I asked to see her before we left - because you never know with anesthesia - it can be hard on dogs.  So they brought her in to see us.  When they took her away, Jayden ran after her and started crying when she went behind the door.  It almost made me cry.  Thank goodness she is so healthy and is already well on her way to recovery.  Poor Jayden would have been distraught.
The second thing that happened is that my grandmother passed away Monday morning.  She is technically my step-grandmother is the third grandparent that I've lost.  I have three more, but we've lost one of each set so far.  She was very sick and she is now in a better place.  While we are all sad, we are also relieved that she is no longer in pain and that my granddad no longer has the impossible burden of grieving someone while they are still alive.  I am sad that Jayden never got to meet her, but he will learn about her and hear about her amazing life, just as he will learn about all of his great grandparents that he never got to meet.
