So, it turns out that an extra early wakeup plus a full day in the sun at Disneyland does not equal a good result the next day. Jayden decided he was tired at about 10:30 am and told us by laying down on the floor of the family room with his arm over his eyes. Sadly neither my phone nor my camera were close enough for me to get a picture. I took him upstairs and laid him down. He was asleep about a minute later. Carmen and I had planned to go to lunch so we figured he'd wake up around 11:30 or 12 and we'd take off. 11:30 comes and goes. Then 12. Then 12:30. Carmen and I are starving at this point. Then 1:00 comes and Jayden is still asleep, and not even moving around. Carmen and I are trying to decide what to do at this point and start setting deadlines: if he's not up by 1:15, then we'll decide to eat here; if he's not up by 1:20, then Carmen will go and get food and bring it home; if he's not up by 1:30 we'll just wake him up and get going; etc. Finally, it's 1:30 and I decide he needs to wake up because he needs to eat also. This is a decision I regret later, but at the time we're both so hungry we can't think straight.

| I tried multiple times to wake Jayden up at 1:30 - that should have been my first clue to let him sleep. I even took a picture of him with the flash. And nothing - not even movement. The poor kid was completely exhausted. |
Jayden feels warm when he wakes up, but we figure that's just because he's been sleeping and we don't think too much of it. We go to lunch and Jayden is fussy the whole time and doesn't eat even close to what he normally eats. We run a couple errands on the way home, getting home around 3 or 3:30. He falls asleep again around 3:30. He sleeps another 1-1/2 hours. When he wakes up at 5:00, we take his temperature again and it's still high - 103 degrees, basically. I'm of course nervous, since once you hit 104 degrees it's pretty much time to get to the ER.
One of my best friends was having her engagement party that night and I desperately wanted to go (and wanted Carmen and Jayden to come too), but I also didn't want to leave Jayden if he was that sick. Jayden had no other symptoms, so Carmen convinced me to go anyways and reassured me he'd send me updates if the situation worsened. Jayden ended up eating a little bit and watching a cartoon movie with Carmen (I agreed ahead of time that TV was okay, only because it would keep him entertained and quiet. I got these updates while I was at Stacy's house:
 |
| "He is feeling better and wanted a pouch. He loves the movie cats and dogs so we are watching that and he is talking about them now. He just went in the drawer to get some puffs now." And I talked to Carmen briefly and he said that Jayden was talking to the cats and dogs as if they were talking to him. So cute. |
 |
| "Good movie mommy." |
 |
| "Playing with balls now." |
So clearly he started to feel much better. Just before bedtime I got the report that his temperature was down to just over 99 degrees which made me feel a ton better. I'm guessing everyone at Stacy's party thinks I'm insane because all I could do was talk about Jayden. But I was really glad I got to go and celebrate my lovely friend (and her sister, who also is engaged!).
He also woke up in the middle of the night twice on Saturday night - Carmen got him back to sleep both times, mostly by passing out on Jayden's floor himself! On Sunday night he woke up at 3 am and wouldn't go back to sleep until 4:30 when I brought him in to bed with us. Needless to say both Jayden and I were exhausted Monday morning so I called in sick and kept him home from daycare thinking he could get some extra rest. His temperature was back to 98.6, but I just felt like an extra day at home would be good for him. I took him to the office briefly to pick up some work,

| I had some sunglasses at the office and Jayden took a liking to them, even asking me to put them on him. |
and then spent the rest of the day trying to get him to nap. He slept a total of about an hour, which defeated the whole purpose of him being home. He also barely ate anything, particularly compared to how he normally eats. Oh well. My intentions were there, I just couldn't get it to work. My big accomplishment for the day was that I did make a pretty fabulous dinner for Carmen and me - teriyaki salmon with scallions and broccoli with an Asian sauce.
Last night he woke up in the middle of the night again - or really in the early morning - at 4 am. Carmen couldn't get him to go back to sleep this time, so he and Jayden went in to a guest bedroom and slept for a few hours. I woke them up around 7 to get them moving. Jayden was relatively cheerful - I think more hungry than anything else since he had not eaten much the past two days. He loves looking out into the backyard, so we checked that out this morning:

| Checking out the dirt and the holes in the backyard. |
 |
| Looking at the agua - it was raining this morning and the trench was filled with water. Clearly very cool. |
Julia said he was tired today, but still okay. He took an almost two hour nap, which is amazing for daycare. I didn't get to talk to her much, but besides being tired he was pretty good at home tonight too. So I think he's over whatever this random fever was. I'm chalking it up to sun sickness, exhaustion, whatever - since there were no other symptoms I don't think it was actually a virus or anything.
 |
| Jayden's "cry" face. Or as my favorite blogging toddler says, his "enhanced emotional response." He scrunches up his eyes and nose, wrinkles his forehead, raises his upper lip and sticks out his lower lip. It's pretty impressive really, and it comes with this great wail. But no tears. Never any tears. And if you show him a car, it disappears in about a half a second (except when he's really tired, then it's better to just rush him upstairs and get him in the bath and then the bed, which is what we did tonight). |
So, long story short, he's fine. Since Carmen is now out of town, I am knocking on all kinds of wood and crossing all fingers and toes that he makes it through the night tonight since I'm still pretty tired and I have no backup. Hopefully he'll be nice to his mama.
